OCEAN VEILED  |  2019

Entry piece for i Light Singapore 2019

Titled “Ocean Veiled”, sea sweepings takes center stage in the installation as it inflates periodically to replicate the movement of the ocean where the plankton resides. Hung from a gabion frame, the work plays with the original function of the infrastructure as a preventative measure against land erosion to talk about the role that we play in the upkeep of the planktons’ habitat which is the sea that surrounds the island of Singapore. In spite of its lack in natural resources,

As the sea comes to life in the installation, the bioluminescent life-forms represented through the faint glow of lights embedded within the installation would also flicker along with the “changing tides of the sea” where the transience of its bio-luminescent beauty attempts to raise awareness towards these inconspicuous microorganisms, that serves as a reminder of its’ ephemerality in the face of challenging tides such as climate change. Through the upcycling of plastic bags and bottles that are common culprits of ocean toxicity, and warming waters the audience are invited to reflect upon the reciprocal role that we play in the conservation of our environment and the continual survival of the planktons.
